Bid for More Speed Traps
Telford could soon have four more fixed
speed cameras to keep an eye on motorists using two of Shropshire's most
dangerous roads, if the Government gives the go-ahead for funding.
Two of the cameras would be installed on Leegate Avenue,
Leegomery, where eight-year-old Aaron Plowman was killed last summer as
he crossed the road on his bike.
The other two cameras would be placed on Dale Road, Coalbrookdale,
which leads in to the Ironbridge Gorge.
West Mercia Safety Camera Partnership hopes to win approval
for the cameras in its bid for the 2005/06 financial year from April.
Bosses also hope to get backing for three more mobile
camera sites in the Telford area - on the B5062 Edgmond Road at Newport,
and on the A442 at Cold Hatton Heath and Sleapford.
Partnership communications manager Heather Mead said:
"We want to have two cameras in Leegate Avenue and two in Dale Road,
covering traffic in both directions. Both roads have a 30 mph limit."
She said Leegate Avenue, in particular, had a very high
accident rate, with 26 personal injury collisions and 13 accidents in
which people had been killed or seriously injured between 2000 and 2003.
Dale Road had seen eight accidents, four of which resulted
in people being killed or seriously injured.
